The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool: A Symbol of American History and Present Challenges

3 days ago 0

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has stood as a witness to American history, both its triumphs and its challenges. This pool, located in Washington D.C., has served as a significant gathering place for various protests and celebrations. Its historical significance is matched by its current state, which has become part of a new controversy.

In April, President Trump described the water in the reflecting pool as “filthy” and “disgusting.” In response, he initiated a process to refurbish the basin with a vibrant “American flag blue” color. This effort involved a no-bid contract intended to complete the makeover before the July 4th celebrations. The project eventually reached a cost exceeding $14 million. Yet, the outcome was not what many expected—the pool retained a visibly green hue, reminiscent of the Chicago River’s dye during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. However, unlike the Chicago River, which assumes its green shade temporarily, the reflecting pool’s color results from uncontrolled algae growth.

Algae have been a persistent presence in the reflecting pool since it was first filled in 1923. The combination of sunlight and stagnant, warm water creates an ideal environment for algae blooms. These conditions often arise in a shallow, stationary body of water during the warm Washington D.C. summers. A recent satellite analysis by the University of Virginia highlighted an increase in algae this month, marking a five-year high.

To address this, the Interior Department introduced a “state-of-the-art ozone nanobubbler filtration system,” aiming to combat the algae. A spokesperson for President Trump, Kate Martin, emphasized that this effort marks a lasting solution, contrasting with an earlier project during President Obama’s first term that aimed to prevent the pool from sinking and included a new filtration system.

In these politically polarized times, the algae in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool serve as a reminder that some issues go beyond partisan politics. The greenery of the algae persists, defying simple resolutions tied to party lines.
