The BMJ’s Unique Christmas Edition: A Blend of Fun and Science

1 month ago 0

The BMJ, known formerly as the British Medical Journal, celebrates its Christmas issue by combining unique research and light-hearted topics. Originating in 1982 as an experimental initiative, this issue has grown into a highly anticipated event each year. It provides a mix of entertaining and intriguing articles.

Publishing in this festive edition is prestigious for both scientists and non-scientists. However, competition is tough. Each year, The BMJ receives over a hundred submissions, yet only a few are selected. The deadline for research submissions is July 31, while non-research submissions, such as essays, must be submitted by August 31. A dedicated editorial team, which includes Jenny Rasanathan and Timothy Feeney, meticulously reviews each submission through several meetings.

Timothy Feeney notes that the goal is to offer physicians content they can enjoy during holiday breaks. They aim for intrigue, interest, and sometimes humor. The final issue explores a variety of topics and formats. Notable articles include a quantitative analysis on the socially acceptable amount of free food one can take and a study comparing doctors in the game Sims 4 with real-life doctors. Both encounter challenges with balancing work and life.
