Gorillaz and Macklemore Respond to Controversy Over Israel-Palestine Statements

The band Gorillaz addressed the recent removal of rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran’s tour with a gesture at one of their performances. Frontman Damon Albarn presented a Palestinian flag during a show in Florida. He draped it over his shoulder and emphasized the importance of maintaining a stance on the issue.

Albarn urged the audience, saying, “Don’t forget this. Ever. Stand your position. Don’t ever be neutral.” This action mirrored the controversy involving Macklemore, removed from Sheeran’s tour after expressing support for Palestine. Gorillaz has historically engaged in similar activism, having participated in events like the Together for Palestine concert in 2025.

At the 2024 Glastonbury Festival, Albarn questioned attendees on their stance regarding Palestine, and inquired whether they considered the conflict unjust. The incident with Macklemore, who was ousted from the tour, has seen support from progressive voices. However, Ed Sheeran’s representatives clarified that he was not directly involved in the decision-making process.

Despite the removal, Macklemore remains vocal about his views, stating his position in a detailed Instagram post. He explained, “I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim… Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.” He reinforced his commitment to advocating for Palestine.

Addressing the matter during a concert, Ed Sheeran spoke about his neutral approach to political issues. However, he acknowledged the situation’s humanitarian aspect, stating, “I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.” He condemned both the attack at a music festival in Israel on Oct. 7 and the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
