Study Finds High Levels of Plastic in Bottled Water and Suggests Safer Alternatives

1 hour ago 0

Many people choose bottled water, thinking it is cleaner or safer than tap water. However, recent research suggests reconsideration might be wise. A surprising study has revealed that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic than previously thought.

Nanoplastics, the tiny particles highlighted in the study, are extremely small—one one-thousandth the width of a human hair. These particles can traverse the tissues of the digestive tract or lungs and enter the bloodstream. This capability raises concerns as they might carry potentially harmful synthetic chemicals throughout the body and into cells.

The study highlighted that a liter of store-bought bottled water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles. These particles come from seven different types of plastics, with 90% being nanoplastics. To minimize exposure to these plastic particles, experts advise using filtered tap water stored in stainless steel or glass containers.
