Palmetto State Democrats have chosen their candidate to challenge incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham in the upcoming elections. Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, emerged victorious from a competitive three-way primary in South Carolina. She will likely face Graham, who is pursuing a fifth term, in November.
Dr. Andrews is not new to politics in South Carolina. The state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since the 1990s, when former Senator Fritz Hollings, who retired in 2005, represented the state.
Lindsey Graham’s race for re-election has garnered attention from both parties. Recently, Graham has drawn a Democratic challenger, Dr. Annie Andrews, who previously participated in a debate with Rep. Nancy Mace for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District in October 2022.
While Andrews aims to defeat Graham, she has also set her sights on Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. At a recent rally, she expressed her commitment to lead efforts for Kennedy’s impeachment and removal, citing his role in the anti-vaccine movement as detrimental to public health.
The Senate’s role in impeachment is significant as it serves as the final deciding body in such proceedings. In an op-ed, Andrews highlighted Kennedy’s longstanding opposition to vaccines, linking it to recent public health issues like the measles outbreak.
“Leadership impacts public health outcomes. It’s a reality we must face,” Andrews argued in the op-ed.
Lindsey Graham is contending with a six-way primary that tests former President Trump’s influence. Businessman Mark Lynch, a self-described constitutional conservative, is among the challengers, supported by Trump’s former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent. Kent endorsed Lynch as the ideal candidate to replace Graham.
The upcoming election presents pivotal choices for South Carolina voters, reflecting broader national political dynamics.
