Lane Kiffin, now coaching at LSU, works with a new quarterback talent who possesses similar potential: Sam Leavitt. After transferring from Arizona State, Leavitt brings a fresh perspective under Kiffin’s leadership. He had previously led Arizona State to a Big 12 championship and reached the College Football Playoff in 2024. However, a foot injury hampered his progress in 2025.

Jordan Reid of ESPN observed that NFL scouts believe Leavitt may advance from a Day 2 prospect to a first-round pick if he shows excellence at LSU.

Reid commented on Leavitt’s situation, highlighting his need to bounce back after a successful 2024 season was followed by an injury-filled 2025. Leavitt is a dual-threat quarterback with quick reflexes, an ideal fit for Kiffin’s style that fosters rapid development in quarterbacks. This could elevate Leavitt from a Day 2 status to a first-round draft consideration.

In 2024, Leavitt achieved 2,885 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Despite his injury the following year, he maintained a 5-2 record as a starter, accumulating 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Leavitt recently reported full recovery, though he continues foot maintenance during warmups. Kiffin has expressed satisfaction with Leavitt’s progress in training, noting significant improvement since spring practice when his foot posed limitations.

“Now that he’s healthy, he’s had a great week and we’re really excited about him,” said Kiffin.

At LSU, Leavitt benefits from a stronger supporting team compared to Arizona State. His performance is crucial for LSU’s potential College Football Playoff success. A successful season could significantly enhance his prospects for an NFL draft selection.
