Runoff Election Set to Decide Replacement for Former Rep. Eric Swalwell

1 hour ago 0

Voters in California’s 14th Congressional District, covering part of Alameda County, are preparing to vote in the runoff to find a successor for former Rep. Eric Swalwell. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April due to allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

The Democratic Party is expected to retain control of the seat, as both candidates advancing from California’s top-two primary system are Democrats. In the first round held in June, State Sen. Aisha Wahab emerged as the frontrunner with 42.8% of the vote. Former Dublin Mayor Melissa Hernandez followed with 16.8%.

Wahab is viewed as the more progressive candidate, whereas Hernandez is seen as more moderate. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and an opposing super PAC have spent money in the race, igniting discussion over AIPAC’s involvement in Democratic elections this year.

Polling stations are set to close at 11 p.m. EDT. Stay informed through Decision Desk HQ for real-time election results.
