Reflections on Father’s Day Without My Father

This Father’s Day is a unique one for me, as it is the first without my father, Leo E. Perino. My dad passed away peacefully at the end of May 2026, shortly after retiring, at the age of 79. He was passionate about his work and devoted to his daughters. His influence was profound, shaping the path I took in life and contributing to my happiness and achievements.

The Impact of a Father’s Guidance

In observing my friends who are raising daughters, I am reminded of the valuable lessons my father imparted. He instilled five key principles that played a significant role in my upbringing:

1. Affirmation of Gender Equality

Growing up in the 1970s during the advent of the “girl power” movement, my father exemplified gender equality through his actions rather than words. He repeatedly affirmed that girls could achieve anything they set their minds to, encouraging my sister Angie and me to aim high. This reinforcement fostered a belief in our capabilities, embodied in the yellow T-shirt I often wore proudly, proclaiming “Anything boys can do, girls can do better.” This mentality encouraged us to strive for success without limitation.

2. Prioritizing Education and Reading

My father’s emphasis on education was evident from an early age. His tradition of discussing news articles fostered a love for reading and critical thinking. Every week, he ensured we engaged with newspapers and magazines, prompting lively discussions. This instilled in me a lifelong passion for the news and the importance of intellectual curiosity.

3. Encouraging Articulation of Thoughts

My father practiced engaging conversations on news and politics that honed my ability to articulate ideas confidently. Through debate and affirmation, he encouraged expression. This not only prepared me for future professional interactions but also instilled confidence that would serve me well in public speaking roles.

4. Embracing Faith

Faith was integral to my upbringing, and my father’s encouragement in religious practices instilled core values. It became a source of comfort and resilience, especially in times of grief, and brought joy. My sister and I shared this bond through our Sunday discussions and church attendance, which became a cherished routine.

5. Leading Without Judgment

When academic pursuits misaligned with my career aspirations, my father’s unconditional support eased my fears. A pivotal moment came when I admitted this misalignment post-graduate school. His response was comforting, prioritizing support over judgment. This leadership style empowered my sister and me in our major life decisions, providing a safe haven for guidance.
