In 2013, Randy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure resulting from viral cardiomyopathy. Complications ensued when a blood clot caused a massive stroke, leading to partial paralysis and speech impairment. Reflecting on that time, Mary remarked on the proximity to life-and-death situations they faced. What seemed like a routine medical visit turned into a five-and-a-half-month hospital stay.

“Obviously, during the stroke, that was probably the closest life or death situation,” Mary said. “We left home thinking we were getting simple care for congestion, but didn’t come back for months.”
