Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude to thousands of followers at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday after undergoing surgery to remove a malignant tumor. He announced plans to gradually return to his regular duties.

The crowd celebrated when the pope appeared at the window overlooking the square, where he had recently disclosed that a nodule was discovered on his lung. This led to a surgical procedure to remove it.

“Now that this delicate phase is behind me, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” Leo stated, sounding strong mere days after having the lower lobe of his right lung removed.

Pope Leo XIV expressed a deep connection with individuals experiencing illness or frailty. He conveyed gratitude to the medical team at Gemelli Hospital who treated him. After addressing the crowd, he briefly waved before returning to his residence in the Apostolic Palace.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a significant surgery last week to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. Adenocarcinoma, a prevalent type of lung cancer, was confirmed during the procedure.

Upon leaving Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the pope informed a reporter that he was feeling “much better” after a swift recovery, following a shorter hospital stay than expected.

American visitors were particularly eager to join prayers with the first U.S.-born pope. Marla Marsala from Michigan was relieved to participate in prayer with the pope after plans to attend Mass were canceled due to his hospitalization.

Leo’s next major event is a scheduled trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from Nov. 6-17. His itinerary includes multiple flights and helicopter rides. Dr. Stefano Margaritora noted that Leo’s health should not deter this journey. He anticipates the pope will make a full recovery soon.

Ongoing histological testing will offer insights into the tumor’s molecular and genetic attributes. These results will guide potential further treatments, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted oral therapy based on the tumor’s specific genetic features.
