Pope Leo XIV announced on Sunday that he is gradually returning to his duties after a critical phase in recovering from lung cancer surgery. Following the removal of part of his right lung, he expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received.
In a statement on X, Leo thanked those who supported him during his recovery. He extended special appreciation to the medical professionals at Gemelli Hospital:
“I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital.”
The pope shared his experience, emphasizing his empathy towards individuals living with illness:
“This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.”
Leo made these remarks during his Sunday appearance at the Vatican, following his release from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 71-year-old pope was discharged on Saturday after a four-day hospital stay.
Lung Adenocarcinoma Diagnosis
The Vatican confirmed that Leo underwent surgery to address lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. This diagnosis surfaced about 17 months into his papacy, which began in May 2025, when he became the first American pope.
Statements from the Vatican
During Leo’s hospitalization, the Vatican reported that his recovery was proceeding as expected. Blood tests and a chest X-ray after surgery showed positive results. He began walking, resumed his regular diet, and celebrated Mass while hospitalized. His public appearance at the Apostolic Palace window on Sunday marked an important recovery milestone.
U.S. Leaders Send Well Wishes
After news of Leo’s diagnosis, President Donald Trump expressed well-wishes, noting a positive prognosis:
“I want to see Pope Leo get well. We just want to wish him our love and our best wishes.”
Despite past friction over issues like the Iran war and immigration, Trump emphasized his support. Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic, also extended support:
“Our family continues to pray for the good health and full recovery of Pope Leo XIV. May God grant him strength as he works to get better. I hope he knows that millions of American Christians are thinking about him.”
Vance sent additional regards to Leo’s older brother, Louis Prevost, who faces health issues:
“We also want to send our best wishes to a true American original and great guy, Lou Prevost, who is also facing his own health challenges.”
Upcoming Engagements
Leo plans a major engagement, a visit to South America from November 6 to 17. He will travel to Peru, Uruguay, and Argentina. This trip entails multiple flights and two helicopter rides to high altitudes. His surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, stated there are no clinical reasons to cancel this trip.
There is uncertainty about potential cancer spread; no prognosis has been released. Upcoming tumor test results may guide treatment options, which could include chemotherapy or targeted therapies based on genetic characteristics.
