Former President Barack Obama has accused the Trump administration of using the federal government against its political rivals. He made this assertion while defending Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota amid a scrutiny of her citizenship.
Obama alleged that the administration is aiming to revoke Omar’s U.S. citizenship and deport her for her criticism of President Donald Trump. He cautioned that this move could set a troubling precedent.
“It is a fundamental tenet of American democracy that the government cannot selectively target individuals merely because of their political views or expressions,” Obama stated on social media platform X.
Obama’s comments followed a search by federal agents at Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C. This was part of a criminal investigation into her immigration status.
Sources had previously informed Fox News Digital that investigators are probing whether Omar or her father engaged in fraud on immigration documents when she obtained U.S. citizenship decades ago.
Obama defended Omar’s status, explaining that she came to the United States with her father at age 12 and became a citizen at 17 upon her father’s naturalization.
He dismissed investigators’ claims suggesting that Omar was 18 at that time, which would have required her to apply for citizenship independently.
“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official due to her criticisms of the president,” Obama remarked.
Fox News Digital has attempted to contact the White House and Department of Homeland Security for comments on Obama’s accusations.
Trump has denied involvement in the inquiry, stating earlier that the matter is under the purview of the Justice Department. “I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me,” he remarked.
Obama further accused the administration of repeatedly going after perceived political adversaries, citing federal actions involving New York’s attorney general, a former FBI director, and Federal Reserve members.
He stated, “The fact that any president, or any administration, engages in such blatant attempts to intimidate should anger all Americans, irrespective of their stance on Congresswoman Omar’s political views.”
Obama warned, “If this becomes the norm, there is no reason to believe it will stop at her, nor that future presidents from either party will refrain from similar actions.”
