North Korea has taken a significant step in expanding its naval prowess. The commission of the country’s first naval destroyer, named Choe Hyon, marks a new chapter. Leader Kim Jong-un officially introduced this 5,000-ton warship this past Tuesday at the port in Nampo, southwest of Pyongyang.
State media reports that Mr. Kim’s goal is to extend naval influence beyond North Korea’s waters. During the commissioning ceremony, he emphasized that the navy was entering full-fledged service. Kim also noted that the development of nuclear weapons for the navy is proceeding steadily. This destroyer symbolizes an effort to expand and modernize the navy, especially since its initial test run in April of the previous year.
Historically, North Korea’s navy has played a minor role compared to the larger South Korean navy and U.S. fleets in nearby waters. Many of North Korea’s vessels are outdated, originating from Soviet designs, and have mostly remained in coastal areas.
The expansion of Kim’s navy aligns with his recent policy of providing military support to Russia amid its conflict in Ukraine. In return, North Korea is reportedly receiving oil, food, and military technology. Analysts in South Korea indicate that recent missile tests from the Choe Hyon feature weapons with potential Russian influences, such as a supersonic cruise missile.
Traditionally, North Korea’s nuclear capabilities centered on ballistic missiles. The nation lacks nuclear-capable aircraft and submarines. In recent years, Kim has prioritized naval nuclearization by testing submarine-launched ballistic missiles and revealing new projects such as a nuclear-powered submarine hull. Additionally, North Korea claims to have created unmanned underwater vehicles capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
