The NFL has taken a significant step in broadening its international footprint by organizing its first regular-season game in Australia this season. This expansion marks a departure from its traditional focus on England.

The league plans to set a new record for international games in the 2026-27 season. In addition to Australia and England, teams will play in countries such as France, Brazil, Spain, Germany, and Mexico.

The NFL is preparing for its debut game in the Paris area, but social unrest in France poses security challenges. Despite protests entering their third week, the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints is still scheduled for October 25 at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris.

“We’re excited for the first-ever regular season game in Paris, and preparations continue as scheduled,” said the NFL in a statement obtained by ESPN. “We work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters.”

The NFL has a history of relocating games due to extreme weather or field issues, but such changes are typically rare. Security concerns in France have not changed the game plan yet.

France faces protests focused on education reform, with demands for better resources, improved school facilities, and addressing teacher shortages. Some schools report deteriorating buildings and rat infestations. Demonstrations have sometimes turned violent, leading authorities to use crowd-control measures like tear gas and stun grenades.

With presidential elections approaching next spring, these protests add complexity to the backdrop of the game.

For the game in France, the Saints will serve as the designated home team. Despite recent challenges, New Orleans will face the New York Giants after a streak of losses.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are enjoying a recent victory against the Indianapolis Colts and are set to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers soon. The Buccaneers gained their first win by defeating the Dallas Cowboys.
