Kumamoto Earthquake Results in Explosions and Fatalities

A powerful earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan, causing significant devastation. The magnitude 7.1 quake on Tuesday led to an explosion at AEON Mall Kumamoto in Kashima and a collapsed chimney at a factory. At least 23 people lost their lives.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly to locate survivors in Kyushu, the island where the quake occurred. According to Kumamoto’s prefectural government, the disaster injured at least 63 individuals, including five with severe injuries. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara reported a higher death toll of 28, based on a police count, noting some cases are still under investigation. This figure might include unrelated incidents.

Survivors shared harrowing tales, recounting efforts to rescue family members from the debris. Many endured injuries that required hospitalization. With homes damaged and fears lingering, thousands spent another night in evacuation centers set up in gymnasiums and similar venues. More than 23,000 homes lacked electricity, and over 10,000 people sought refuge in around 400 shelters.

Amid the chaos, concerns about health risks from the heat emerged. The Ministry of Environment issued a heat stroke alert for temperatures anticipated to reach 33 C (91 F) on Thursday. Despite Japan’s stringent building codes aimed at quake resilience, older homes proved vulnerable.

The AEON Mall was particularly affected. With approximately 3,000 people evacuated to a parking lot, an explosion later occurred in the mall. The second floor caved in, trapping several individuals. Authorities confirmed six fatalities at the mall from among the 11 extracted from the ruins.

In Yatsushiro, the factory site saw further tragedy. A chimney collapse resulted in eight deaths, with one person still missing. The Kumamoto prefectural government dispatched a disaster team for rescue operations. Family members awaited news near the disaster sites, battling difficult conditions due to the heat.
