Erica Schwartz, the newly appointed director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has openly recognized the internal challenges facing the agency. In her first communication with staff, she highlighted the struggle with morale following a tenure without formal leadership.
Schwartz takes over after a difficult period for the CDC, marked by significant layoffs and a tragic event at its Atlanta headquarters. The agency went without official leadership for about a year, following the brief term of former Director Susan Monarez. Schwartz emphasized the importance of rebuilding trust and morale among staff members.
“I am here asking you to give me the benefit of the doubt and to work with me as I go through our listening sessions to help me rebuild the trust that may have been lost,” stated Schwartz during the meeting. She acknowledged that staff members feel a sense of psychological unsafety, and pledged to work on gaining their trust.
Discussion points during the staff meeting also touched on concerns about vaccine policy. The concerns arose in response to a federal judge’s disbanding of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and an executive order by President Trump regarding vaccine administration.
Schwartz indicated the CDC would seek input on implementing the executive order. She stated, “We are going to be looking at that executive order. Does it make sense? What are the pieces that we like? What are the pieces that we don’t like?” She expressed interest in collaborating with a reconstituted ACIP for further evaluation.
In addition to agency morale and vaccine policy, other health-related reports highlighted in the healthcare sector include a survey reporting historically low levels of alcohol consumption among Americans. Another study linked sugary drinks to an increased risk of stomach cancer, affecting individuals in long-term health studies.
There’s also a salmonella outbreak related to jalapeno pepper consumption, now affecting 32 states, with 431 cases reported. Local and national headlines also include a frozen blueberries recall due to E. coli concerns and various state-level healthcare policy changes.
