Recently, the host of the ‘Reading Rainbow’ reboot, Mychal Threets, has decided to focus on his mental health. Threets announced on Threads that he will admit himself to a hospital for treatment. In his message, he stated, ‘I am not okay. I’m seeking help.’ He assured his followers, ‘In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.’
Threets expressed gratitude to those who have supported him, saying, ‘No matter what happens to me, I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you.’
Support flooded in under his post. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown advised him to seek help as soon as possible, writing, ‘If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.’ Another user encouraged Threets, saying, ‘Mychael, please get the help that you need because this world is a better place because you’re in it.’
Many others echoed these sentiments, urging him to take care of himself and emphasizing how loved he is. Threets has been transparent about his mental health journey, having gone viral in 2023 for his uplifting messages on TikTok and Instagram. He later resigned from his librarian position in California in 2024 due to mental health challenges, even contemplating suicide at the time.
Threets took over as the host of ‘Reading Rainbow’ in 2025, succeeding LeVar Burton. The original series aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006.
