Progressive candidates experienced significant losses in the recent Illinois Democratic primaries. Some of these candidates had the backing of prominent progressive figures, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, moderate candidates emerged victorious in key races like House Districts 09, 08, and 02, with Mayor Daniel Biss and former Congresswoman Melissa Bean among the winners.
In a special election to replace the disgraced Rep. Eric Swalwell, progressive state senator and assistant majority leader Aisha Wahab successfully defeated Melissa Hernandez, a moderate public transit executive. This race highlighted the ongoing tension between the establishment and progressive factions within the Democratic Party. Wahab received support from high-profile figures like California Attorney General Rob Bonta and labor icon Dolores Huerta, while Hernandez relied on super PAC funding and endorsements from local officials.
Despite early successes in the election season in states like New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, progressive Democrats recently underperformed in Michigan and Wisconsin’s Democratic primaries. In California’s jungle primary system, where the top two candidates, regardless of party, advance to the general election, Wahab and Hernandez emerged as the leaders, leaving no room for Republicans in the district.
The special election determined who would complete the remaining two months of Swalwell’s term, but the two candidates are expected to face each other again in November for a full two-year term. With California’s redrawn congressional map taking effect, the general election will see minor changes in district boundaries.
Despite recent setbacks, some Democrats argue that socialist influence within the party remains strong, especially among younger voters. The campaign trail saw Hernandez challenging Wahab on ethical issues, while Wahab accused Hernandez of receiving funding from conservative and pro-Israel sources, questioning her progressive credentials.
The campaign finance debates continued with Wahab alleging Hernandez benefited from pro-Israel donors and super PAC expenditures. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a contentious issue within the Democratic Party, as progressives push to replace Democrats who support Israel.
