Jalen Brunson took the spotlight in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, steering the New York Knicks to a win against the San Antonio Spurs. In contrast, Victor Wembanyama showcased strong numbers despite a challenging night on the court in his finals debut for the Spurs.
The NBA Finals often hinge on contributions from the entire team rather than individual stars. Game 2 is set for Friday night in San Antonio. The Spurs aim to even the series before traveling to New York, while the Knicks seek to become the first team since Houston in 1995 to begin the finals with two consecutive road victories. The game starts at 8:42 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on ABC. The Spurs are slightly favored, with a 6.5-point advantage.
In Game 1, Brunson scored 30 points, leading a comeback from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and helping close the game with an 11-0 run. While Brunson received much acclaim, the Knicks emphasized the contributions of others, notably Josh Hart. Though Hart’s point tally was three, his impact included 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. This performance is comparable to Larry Bird’s 1986 finals game, where he had similar stats.
His energy is just relentless. It doesn’t stop. I mean, he eats candy all the time. That tells you who he is. He’s a big kid with an absurd amount of energy, said Brunson about Hart.
The Knicks are pursuing their 13th consecutive playoff win, which would mark the second-longest single-season streak in NBA history. In 2017, Golden State achieved 15 consecutive playoff victories.
De’Aaron Fox of the Spurs commented, We know it’s a long series. Obviously you want to win every game that you have on your home court, but it’s not the way it happens every day. We try to go in and fix the things we need to fix. Obviously, we want a different outcome.
