During the radio broadcast of Game 4 of the NBA Finals, ESPN broadcaster Monica McNutt was caught on a hot mic, questioning Taylor Swift’s loyalty to the New York Knicks. She exclaimed, “Is that Taylor Swift? She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl.” Her comments quickly gained attention due to Swift’s dedicated fan base, often protective of any criticism towards the singer.
Despite McNutt’s claims, Swift has attended several Knicks games since 2014, including during the team’s less successful seasons. OutKick reached out to McNutt for comments regarding her statement about Swift. She did not respond, but she did address the situation with TMZ the following day. She acknowledged her oversight regarding Swift’s past attendance, stating, “Swifties, I appreciate your passion. I said what I said and here’s the deal, if I’m wrong, and I am wrong apparently because we’ve got an OG Amar’e Stoudemire jersey. I misspoke. I apologize.”
This incident isn’t the first time McNutt’s remarks have drawn criticism. Last year, she was noted for expressing disdain towards Caitlin Clark, a college basketball player, highlighting perceived racial bias among Clark’s supporters. McNutt remarked, “Caitlin represented, and again, some of this to me probably is not fair to her, because it was not anything that she said or was truly based on her personality, but she was a white girl from the middle of America. And so she represented a whole lot to a lot of people, whether that is truly what she prescribed to or not.”
In contrast, she did not address whether young black girls supporting Serena Williams might also indicate racial bias, allowing support for Serena as purely admiration for a great athlete. Additionally, McNutt has faced scrutiny for an incident last summer. While guest-hosting “First Take” on ESPN, she appeared not to recognize NFL legend Barry Sanders during a segment, adding to controversies surrounding her remarks and knowledge as a sports analyst.
