Metea Valley’s junior libero, Caroline Candela, sometimes stands out despite her stature amid taller teammates. Standing at 5-foot-2, Candela makes her presence felt on the volleyball court with her loud, aggressive approach. She enthusiastically claims, “I like to rule the court, be loud, aggressive and go for anything I can.” Sharing libero duties with senior Sienna Bialek, Candela brings defensive prowess to the Mustangs (11-14), setting a standard for her teammates.

Metea Valley coach Dave Macdonald praises her fearlessness on the court. He notes, “Caroline is one of those players who seemingly have no concern for their bodies during defense. She goes for every ball, and both defense and hitters trust her ability to keep the ball in play.” Junior outside hitter Ishana Harish appreciates her energy, stating, “Her energy on the court truly lifts everyone’s spirit. Whether we win or lose a point, she raises our morale.”

During a loss against Downers Grove North, Candela motivated her team between sets to play with vigor. “We needed to be much louder,” she recalls. “The first set was quiet, so I urged the team to be aggressive and enter the second set ready to fight, avoiding a losing mentality.” Her influence showed, with teammates rallying to tie at 3-3 through key plays.

Candela contributed nine digs, three service points, and an ace, advancing the team’s score with persistent defense. “She’s vital for our communication,” Harish states. “She unites us, making the team louder on the court.” Despite the loss, the Mustangs showcased resilience, keeping their spirits high.

Candela vows to keep trying, regardless of challenges. Macdonald highlights her enthusiasm for defense, saying, “Playing defense isn’t glamorous, but Candela thrives on it. Despite injuries, she perseveres.” Her love for the game grows as she eagerly anticipates playing against stronger opponents.

Her journey into sports began in elementary school with gymnastics and basketball, but volleyball brought her greatest joy since seventh grade. “I love my teammates,” she shares. “Volleyball’s team unity is truly enjoyable.” As Candela aims to improve continually and pursue volleyball long-term, her drive is appreciated by Coach Macdonald. “Her consistency is a key asset, especially late in the season. We hope for her continued growth.”
