The Hites Brothers’ Journey in Football

38 minutes ago 0

Reid and Connor Hites from St. Ignatius have a unique origin story in football. Unlike traditional backyard games, the brothers grew up in Lincoln Park, utilizing a turfed patio atop their garage. This setup included netting to ensure safety, creating an environment for play.

Connor Hites, reflecting on their childhood, recalls, “We would go out there, play catch, play one-on-one, just try to tackle each other.” Both brothers donned oversize Bears jerseys and pads, engaging in spirited play. Reid, the younger sibling, now serves as St. Ignatius’ starting quarterback in his junior year.

Initially, Connor played as a receiver. Presently, he is a senior hybrid linebacker, leading the defense for the Wolfpack, ranked No. 13 by the Chicago Tribune. Securing Division I scholarship offers, Connor chose Penn, aligning with his father Kevin’s legacy, who played football at Brown.

On campus, Connor practices diligently. Despite his 6-3, 205-pound frame, St. Ignatius coach Matt Miller acknowledges Connor’s appeal in modern college defenses. Miller explains, “He’s a college nickel, a popular role today.” Connor’s ability to cover sets him apart, in contrast to traditional linebackers tasked with plugging gaps.

Connor displays an old-school Catholic League linebacker spirit, noted for his fearless play. “He’s flying into contact like nobody I’ve seen,” Coach Miller asserts, praising his aggressive style.

Reid Hites faced challenges early in his quarterback career. A Week Zero scrimmage injury resulted in a broken arm and surgery, impacting St. Ignatius’ season record. Reid persevered, recovering to guide his team to Prep Bowl victory.

Reid recounts, “The first week I was back, it was rough. After that, I got in that groove again.” In 2022 and 2023, St. Ignatius tasted playoff success, reaching the Class 6A semifinals and Class 8A quarterfinals. Yet, tough schedules led to difficult regular seasons.

This season, placed in the CCL Orange, St. Ignatius (5-1) overcame challenges against notable teams. Upcoming is a formidable test against No. 2 Loyola. The brothers remain optimistic, as Connor reveals, “Our team thought this is how the season would go. We have high standards.”

Although renowned for academics, St. Ignatius offers a stunning view from Roosevelt Avenue, with Chicago’s skyline visible during drills. The Hites’ urban upbringing roots them in city life. Reid shares, “We grew up around it, so it’s normal to us.” Their parents, committed to city living, shape their sons’ environment.

With scenic views and ambitions high, St. Ignatius football thrives.
