Maria Kang built her career focused on fitness and healthy eating, encouraging other mothers to make wellness a priority. Despite her efforts, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with colon cancer. This shocking news reshaped her understanding of health.
Kang gained fame in 2013 after a photo of her fit body alongside her three sons sparked discussions on fitness and motherhood. The viral image, which was captioned “What’s your excuse?”, earned her the title “No Excuse Mom” and led to the creation of wellness communities globally.
Unexpected Diagnosis
In November 2023, Kang’s life shifted dramatically when she learned she had stage 4 colon cancer. She always considered herself healthy and was shocked by the diagnosis.
She reflected on digestive issues she experienced since adolescence, including chronic constipation and bloating, which worsened under stress. Despite attempting various remedies, these problems persisted.
Initially, after detecting the tumor through a biopsy following a colonoscopy, she tried holistic treatments for 12 weeks. When those didn’t work, she began chemotherapy with a treatment called FOLFOX in 2024.
Surgical Intervention
Following one chemotherapy treatment, a significant reduction in the tumor size was noted, prompting Kang to choose surgery to remove it. The operation included removing part of her colon, several reproductive organs, and her appendix.
She temporarily required a colostomy and later an ileostomy. Fortunately, her medical scans currently show no suspicious masses, though her doctors continue to monitor her health.
Understanding Health Differently
Data from the American Cancer Society reveals worrying trends, predicting that 158,850 Americans will have colorectal cancer in 2026, with around 55,230 deaths expected in 2023.
While the overall incidence of colorectal cancer is declining, rates are increasing among younger adults. The society and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advise regular screenings starting at age 45.
Kang’s fitness and nutrition strategies have significantly changed post-cancer. Previously training extensively, she now moves based on desire, favoring activities like walking and dancing. Her approach to food emphasizes balance, steering towards natural foods but remaining open to other options.
Health Awareness
Kang uses her experience to highlight that healthy habits do not guarantee immunity from diseases like cancer. Her journey emphasizes the unpredictable nature of health, urging people to remain vigilant.
The American Cancer Society recommends consulting a healthcare provider for symptoms like persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss, regardless of age.
