On Tuesday, Australian police charged a man with what they allege was a deliberate attack on independent lawmaker Helen Haines using a vehicle. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Wangaratta, where Haines reportedly lost a leg after being hit multiple times by a car. She was standing near her parked vehicle when the attack took place.
Authorities explained that the 65-year-old was accessing the trunk of her car when the alleged perpetrator, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser, deliberately rammed into her. According to local authorities and Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, the attacker reversed and hit her again after initially pinning her against her vehicle.
Brendan Nugent, from Tarrawingee, faced charges including intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury, and harming a federal official. He has been held in police custody since bystanders subdued him shortly after the incident.
“Political violence is not common in Australia, although data indicate an increase in threats in recent years,” authorities noted.
Nugent is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, where the possibility of bail may be discussed. Rod Nugent, the suspect’s father, expressed his shock and pledged cooperation with law enforcement, describing Haines as a ‘deeply respected’ community member.
The Wangaratta community, including Mayor Irene Grant, expressed disbelief and devastation over the violent act against the well-liked Haines. Haines was known for her friendly demeanor and advocacy, often engaging with locals when not occupied with parliamentary duties in Canberra.
Haines began her parliamentary career in 2019 as an independent, representing Indi and securing the seat again in 2025 by a wide margin. Her work on climate action, rural healthcare, support for small businesses, and Indigenous rights earned her respect. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Haines for her integrity and compassionate advocacy.
