Khalib Townsend’s Passion for Birds Finds a Mentor

In Philadelphia, seven-year-old Khalib Townsend spends a rainy day at the Audubon Discovery Center’s nature trail. Wearing a bright blue waterproof jacket, he holds binoculars as he embarks on a bird walk. I just got interested in birds because they’re cool and I want to study all types of animals, Khalib says, smiling with missing front teeth. His love for nature fuels his dream of becoming a conservation scientist. Because I care for the Earth, he adds.

Khalib’s feelings resonate with Keith Russell, a conservation scientist at the Audubon Discovery Center. Russell recalls pressures children face growing up. There’s a lot of pressure to fit in, he says. He notes barriers for Black folks in birding. It’s important to have support from people who understand your interest, he emphasizes.

Supporting Khalib in his quest, Russell invites him to the nature trail for a personal birding experience. Khalib asks prepared questions about Russell’s career journey. Russell shares his early passion for birds, which began in first grade. With parental support, he got binoculars and a bird book, connecting with someone who enhanced his birding skills. This led him to study biology in college and ultimately work with Audubon for conservation.

One major part of Russell’s work focuses on preventing birds from flying into windows, a leading cause of their deaths in the U.S. He explains how ropes and dots on windows at the Discovery Center help reduce these incidents.

Russell appreciates Khalib’s efforts to protect birds using window stickers. Thank you for doing that, he says. They discuss various birds, including seagulls, and their behavior related to light.

When asked why birds matter, Russell highlights their beauty, interesting behavior, and enchanting songs that people love. He stresses the importance of protecting them.

Discussing evolution, Russell explains that fossils suggest a link between birds and dinosaurs. This fascinates Khalib, who acknowledges the knowledge contained in ancient fossils.

The Discovery Center’s manmade pond draws diverse waterfowl, enriching the local ecosystem. These interactions inspire young Khalib to continue his journey towards conservation.
