Kansas Mother Faces Health Crisis Following Spider Bite

A Kansas mother of four is on the mend after a spider bite led to a serious medical ordeal. Britagne Miller of Goddard, located just 14 miles from Wichita, experienced this frightening event around a campfire at Cheney Lake on May 28. There, multiple spiders crawled on her, and she was apparently bitten, according to reports by local media, KAKE and FOX Kansas.

Approximately four days later, one of the bites on her calf became swollen and intensely painful, leading her to seek medical help. “This one kept swelling and swelling, and it was like a fire stir that’s metal,” she told KAKE. “It was like shooting down my leg into my foot and felt like it was being stabbed.”

Her hospital stay began on June 4 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, where surgery was necessary. Britagne’s recovery was complicated by existing blood-clotting disorders, liver issues, and medication allergies, as reported by KAKE.

Serious infections developed, and doctors diagnosed her with end-stage liver failure, warning her family that her condition might be fatal. Britagne opted to continue treatment in lieu of hospice care, with little memory of her intensive care experience.

She was discharged on July 11 and now recovers at home. Her recovery includes home health care, physical therapy, and regular specialist visits. Although she hopes for a liver transplant, she is not yet on the transplant list, according to KAKE and a GoFundMe page set up by her husband, Jake.

The specific spider species responsible for the bite remains unidentified. Dr. Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist at Kansas State University, mentioned that brown recluse and black widow spiders are common venomous species in Kansas. He suggests sealing cracks and handling undisturbed items like boxes and shoes with care.

The GoFundMe page expresses hope for Britagne’s future, aiming for her full recovery to continue her role as a mom and eventually a grandmother.
