TEHRAN, Iran – On Monday, Iran suspended its talks with the United States as a protest against Israel’s intensified military offensive in Lebanon. Government-aligned media reported this decision, citing the continuation of actions by the Zionist regime in Lebanon, which were seen as violations of the ceasefire. The ceasefire was agreed upon with Lebanon as a precondition, now compromised.
The suspending of talks, which included the exchange of texts through mediators, was announced by the semiofficial news agency, Tasnim. Additionally, civil defense workers were seen inspecting an Israeli strike site in Tyre, a city located in southern Lebanon, on Sunday.
Over the weekend and into Monday, a series of exchanges occurred between the U.S. military and Iranian forces. These exchanges represent the latest surge of violence after a ceasefire was supposedly agreed upon in early April. Tasnim further reported that Iran might consider fully closing the Strait of Hormuz. This route is significant as it previously carried around 20% of the world’s oil supply before the war began. The closure is intended to penalize Israel and those supporting it.
No official comments have been made by the Iranian government, although media often serve as a conduit for such statements. The U.S. did not offer an immediate response to requests for comments. On February 28, the conflict initiated by the U.S. and Israel resulted in thousands of deaths in Iran and Lebanon, including 13 U.S. service members. The event considerably affected global energy prices after Iran’s actions led to an effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
Negotiations concerning a broader agreement have been stalled due to disagreements on several fronts, including the future trajectory of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
