Indonesian Authorities Arrest Two Russians for Drug Smuggling in Bali

Indonesian authorities have apprehended two Russian individuals alleged to have smuggled drugs into Bali. The arrest followed a high-speed chase that resulted in several pedestrians being hit on the island, as reported by officials.

The suspects, a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were caught trying to transport nearly eight kilograms (18 pounds) of hashish in a suitcase from Thailand. This was confirmed by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) through an official statement. “We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish,” stated BNN chief Suyudi Ario Seto.

The woman, known by the initials “KK,” flew into Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. She rented a vehicle and drove to Bali to rendezvous with the man at a seaport on Friday. After meeting, the man, identified as “SK,” picked her up and subsequently left her along with the suitcase at an unspecified location before trying to escape.

Authorities pursued the suspect, who reportedly drove recklessly at high speeds, causing harm to local residents, before being apprehended. Both individuals are now in custody, though further details remain undisclosed. The BNN has shared images of the suspects and the suitcase that contained the hashish.

Investigations are underway to ascertain whether these individuals are part of a larger drug syndicate. Indonesia’s drug laws are among the strictest globally, enforcing severe penalties, including the death penalty for drug traffickers. However, executions have been halted for several years due to a moratorium.

Currently, there are many drug traffickers on death row in Indonesia. The last execution occurred in 2016, involving one Indonesian and three Nigerians convicted of drug smuggling. In December 2024, Mary Jane Veloso was removed from death row and repatriated to the Philippines. Additionally, the remaining “Bali Nine” members, serving lengthy prison terms, were sent back to Australia.

Indonesia’s firm stance on drug offenses continues to see international incidents. In March, two British nationals received nine and 11-year prison sentences for cocaine smuggling into Bali. Last August, a Peruvian woman was detained for allegedly concealing cocaine within a sex toy and her underwear.
