Los Angeles Lakers Enter New Era Without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are beginning a new chapter as this marks the first season in eight years without superstar LeBron James on their lineup. Over recent seasons, James consistently pushed boundaries and set records, sharing historical on-court moments with his son, Bronny James. One memorable highlight was the father-son assist during a game, marking a unique moment in NBA history.

This offseason, LeBron James made the pivotal decision to leave the Lakers, opting to enter free agency. After much speculation about possible returns to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, James ultimately signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

During the Lakers’ media day at the start of their training camp, Bronny James discussed how the absence of his father from the team will impact him. “Feels like he’s not here. … He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season, too. Looking forward to it,” he told reporters, referring to the change as “something different.”

The Lakers have reshaped their roster significantly. They acquired Walker Kessler, a dominant big man, through a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. The team’s efforts to strengthen their backcourt saw the addition of guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

In the previous season, Bronny James primarily played a reserve role with the Lakers. He also spent time playing for their G League affiliate, now known as the Coachella Valley Lakers. Last season, he appeared in 42 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game. His future as an NBA star remains uncertain as he works to carve out a place for himself in a league where his father has excelled.

Bronny expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season without his father on the team, saying, “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season.”

The Lakers are set to start their regular season against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, Oct. 21. A much-anticipated match on Christmas Day will see the Lakers hosting the 76ers, showcasing a potential first on-court game where Bronny and LeBron James face each other as opponents.
