Illinois GOP Chair Criticizes Obama Presidential Center

4 days ago 0

Illinois Republican Party Chairman Bob Grogan has raised concerns about the functioning of the Obama Presidential Center. He claims it operates more as a political hub and headquarters for the Obama Foundation than as a standard presidential library.

The debate encompasses the use of public land, taxpayer-funded infrastructure, and the Center’s financial shortfall.

During the Center’s dedication ceremony, following its Juneteenth opening, Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett acknowledged the American Indian tribes that originally inhabited the land. This gesture forms part of a broader message tied to the idea of America being built on land initially belonging to indigenous tribes.

A permanent display, titled “Acknowledging Indigenous Peoples’ Land and Territory,” near the Center’s museum tower offers further context. It features a quote from former President Barack Obama reflecting on historical injustices faced by Native Americans.

The sign recognizes the sovereign Indigenous peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Supporters view land acknowledgments as essential for recognizing American Indians’ history and their enduring connection to the land.

However, critics see the acknowledgment as performative, questioning the Obama Presidential Center’s occupancy of public land. The Center resides on land transferred from the city of Chicago to the Obama Foundation for $10 under a contentious agreement. Many argue this land transfer displaced Illinois citizens rather than Native Americans.

Critics have scrutinized the transfer of 19.3 acres of public land in Jackson Park to the Foundation under a long-term, minimal-payment agreement. Originally presented as a presidential library, critics claim it has become home to the Obama Foundation.

Grogan believes visitors should consider the display in light of Jackson Park’s history, transformed by landfill and public works post-Great Chicago Fire, belonging to Chicago taxpayers.

Construction costs near $1 billion and required substantial taxpayer-funded infrastructure improvements around Jackson Park. The Obama Foundation has not fulfilled its promise to establish a $470 million endowment to safeguard taxpayers from future operational costs.

The Center was promoted as a catalyst for economic opportunity on Chicago’s South Side, supporting minority-owned businesses. Yet, multiple subcontractors, including minority-owned firms, claim they are owed millions for services rendered on the project.

Obama Foundation’s response to these allegations remains pending. For more details, contact Michael Dorgan, a Fox News Digital and Fox Business writer, via [email protected], or follow him on Twitter at @M_Dorgan.
