Trump Urges Changing Ukrainian Leadership Amid Rising Tensions

22 minutes ago 0

Call for Leadership Change in Ukraine

President Donald Trump suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be replaced. Trump accused Zelensky of missing opportunities to end the conflict with Russia. He also criticized the Ukrainian strike on Russian oil infrastructure, which occurred after Trump’s diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said to reporters outside the White House. “I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal, because he could have made many deals, and for some reason he never does.” These remarks mark Trump’s strongest call yet for Zelensky’s replacement.

Trump-Putin Diesel Agreement and Rising Tensions

The recent Ukrainian attack on a Russian oil hub has heightened tensions. This assault followed Trump’s diesel agreement with Putin, drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers who fear it might boost Russia’s war efforts.

Trump stated he had warned Zelensky against targeting Russian refineries due to the potential global impact on diesel supplies. “We said you can do whatever you want to Russia. Don’t hit these refineries because that’s a world problem,” Trump highlighted.

Strained Relations with Zelensky

Trump’s statement represents a significant increase in tensions with Zelensky. The two leaders have had a tumultuous relationship, clashing publicly in February 2025 during a meeting at the Oval Office. Allegations of disrespect led to a cancellation of a planned minerals agreement signing.

Despite occasional improvements in their relationship, differences persist. For example, during a meeting in December 2025 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump and Zelensky reported moving closer to a resolution of the ongoing war.

Criticism of Ukrainian Military Strategy

Trump expressed frustration over Kyiv’s attacks on Russian refineries, despite Trump’s warnings. The Ukrainian government maintains that these targets are legitimate due to their role in supporting Moscow’s operations.

“He’s not going to affect our farmers, and he’s not going to affect our ranchers, and he’s not going to affect the rest of the world,” Trump cautioned.

Expert Opinions on the Diesel Deal

Energy expert Margarita Balmaceda from Seton Hall University commented on the diesel agreement. She mentioned that the deal might enhance Russia’s position rather than address the global fuel crisis. “As I see it, this deal has the potential to do much to help Russia — and to help Russia pursue its war against Ukraine,” she noted.

Trump and Putin’s Diplomatic Engagements

Trump’s relationship with Putin has encountered scrutiny over the years, particularly regarding allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Trump continues to emphasize his personal relationship with Putin, considering it beneficial for negotiations.

At their 2018 summit in Helsinki, Trump appeared to support Putin’s denial of election interference, which was a key moment described by observers. Discussions between Trump and Putin have included topics from peace negotiations to U.S.-Russia trade relations.

Future Implications

Trump did not outline how Ukraine might replace Zelensky, leaving this to Ukraine’s constitutional processes. However, Trump’s comments could raise questions about future U.S. support for Ukraine, potentially influencing Ukraine’s strategic choices regarding attacks on Russian infrastructure.
