Historic Flooding in Indiana Causes Deaths and Power Outages

Residents ventured through flooded areas in kayaks in Indianapolis on Sunday, August 16, 2026. At least six people lost their lives across Indiana due to the severe flooding. Some areas are starting to recover, though more storms threaten the region.

The National Weather Service reported over 11 inches of rainfall from August 11, across various parts of the state. Thunderstorms are predicted to strike central Indiana late Sunday, risking further floods in already affected areas.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett stated online that the city is facing its worst flooding in more than 30 years. However, floodwaters are now decreasing, and some floodgates have reopened, according to the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. The department mentioned, “Engineering will closely monitor our flood-control infrastructure, like levees and control gates, to ensure proper function. Crews are tasked with removing debris and keeping an eye on the gates for potential further openings.”

Continued flooding is anticipated along the White River in Anderson, which hit a record height of 24.9 feet, as well as along the Wabash River and East Fork White River. Over 128,000 people lacked power as of Sunday afternoon, as reported by the local power company, NIPSCO.

While repairs are underway, community support is evident. Hundreds united at a Rocky Ripple volleyball court to bolster the town’s levee with shovels and sandbags. Long-time resident Margaret Brabant coordinated the volunteers, many of whom were from outside Rocky Ripple. She expressed feeling overwhelmed and grateful for the outpouring support, telling WFYI, “The generosity is just stunning.”

President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana, enabling the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s assistance in recovery efforts. Thunderstorms are also expected to cause heavy rain and possible flooding in West Virginia, according to the National Weather Service.
