Authorities have confirmed the accidental nature of Hayden Panettiere’s death. The Greenville Police Department announced that the investigation into the actress’s death has concluded following the Medical Examiner’s determination.

Hayden Panettiere, known for her role in “Heroes,” passed away at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. On August 16, she was found unresponsive in an apartment. Her death was attributed to the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl and other medications, as reported by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

The Coroner’s Office stated, “On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, a 911 call was received regarding a reported cardiac arrest at 701 Easley Bridge Road in Greenville.” They added that although first responders and EMS provided advanced cardiac life support measures, resuscitation efforts failed, and Panettiere was declared deceased at 2:32 PM.

At the time of her death, Panettiere was accompanied by her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson. According to a police report, Zach appeared “very emotional” as paramedics attempted to revive her. Brian Hickerson reportedly did not become emotional until Panettiere was pronounced dead.

Panettiere had traveled from Los Angeles with Hickerson the day before her passing, according to TMZ. The couple had a brief breakup in 2022 but had since rekindled their relationship. Hickerson’s brother confirmed his relationship with Panettiere to the police.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, born in 2014. Kaya is her child with former fiancé, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko has expressed his mourning and commitment to keeping Panettiere’s memory alive for their daughter.
