Salary Proposal for D.C. Mayor
A proposal to raise the next mayor’s salary to $290,000 could position D.C.’s leader among the highest-paid in the U.S. Council member Anita Bonds put forth the idea to increase the salary by $40,000.
Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic nominee for mayor, likely to win the upcoming election, would benefit from this proposed increase. This new salary is higher than New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s $258,750 salary. New York serves over 8.5 million residents, while D.C. has a population of around 700,000.
Comparison to Other Cities
San Francisco’s mayor reportedly earns $383,760, although Mayor Daniel Lurie works for just $1 yearly. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass earns approximately $318,000. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, rejected a raise to $305,800, choosing to remain in Gracie Mansion rent-free.
Response from Janeese Lewis George
“Families in this city are stretched on childcare, housing and their utility bills, and I am not going to ask them to pay more for the job of the mayor,” said Lewis George.
Lewis George emphasized she did not request this pay raise and would oppose the legislation.
