Hawaii Reports Cyclospora Cases Amid U.S. Outbreak

Hawaii is now reporting cases of cyclosporiasis while the United States continues to experience a surge in infections caused by the foodborne parasite. Federal officials state that the produce linked to the largest outbreak is out of circulation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Tuesday that there are now 18,445 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across the U.S. since May 1, up from 17,180 the previous week. This increase of 1,265 cases spans 49 states and the District of Columbia.

Previously, Hawaii was not included in the CDC’s national map, but Hawaiian health officials have confirmed several cases of cyclosporiasis in the state. Newsweek contacted Hawaii’s Department of Health for further comments.

CDC Map Update

The latest CDC data identifies Michigan as the state with the highest number of cases, ranging from 4,000 to 6,999. Hawaii, now included, has reported between 1 and 49 cases. While Delaware shows no confirmed cases on the CDC map, state officials confirm 13 probable cases, with testing results pending.

Impact of Produce Recalls

Despite federal regulators assuring that iceberg lettuce tied to the outbreak is no longer in the supply chain, over 11,400 illnesses in 20 states have been linked to it as of August 27. This includes 495 hospitalizations and two deaths.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC have stated that the recalled products’ shelf lives have expired. New cases reported may be connected to other outbreaks not yet identified.

Cyclospora Information

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite causing cyclosporiasis. Infection occurs through contaminated food or water, primarily affecting people during spring and summer. Cases may still be reported after this period due to delays in the surveillance process.

Symptoms and Treatment

Common symptoms include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms usually start a week after exposure, lasting for weeks without treatment. Relief might be temporary, with symptoms returning.

Recalled Products and Public Health Advice

The most significant outbreak this year links to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. The recall began on July 17, though no direct positive tests for cyclospora on their products exist. Federal agencies confirm the affected lettuce is no longer on the market.

Hawaii health officials report that the recalled lettuce was neither sold nor distributed in the state. Investigations continue to find any other possible sources.

Comparison to Previous Cyclospora Seasons

This year’s cyclospora cases far exceed previous years. The CDC reports 18,445 confirmed cases since May, with 990 hospitalizations and two deaths. Last year, only 1,180 cases were reported during the same period.

Experts believe actual numbers could be higher, as many cases go undiagnosed. Health agencies expect case totals to grow as delayed reports are processed and new outbreak clusters are investigated.
