Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the box office, amassing $144.5 million domestically over its second weekend. This performance contributes to a total of $1.67 billion globally within 10 days of release. In the U.S. and Canada, the film has earned $655.1 million, while internationally it has surpassed $1 billion. It’s now the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing Toy Story 5 ($1.07 billion globally). This achievement marks a new milestone for Sony films, as no prior Sony release had reached $100 million in its second weekend.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has also been successful, crossing $1 billion globally. The Universal Pictures film brought in $31.5 million domestically in its fourth weekend, achieving a total of $1.1 billion. This makes it Nolan’s most successful film, outperforming The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1 billion).

The success of The Odyssey is partly attributed to IMAX screens, with $147.3 million earned domestically, marking a record for IMAX’s largest domestic release. The film will open in China soon, potentially increasing its total earnings.

Both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have contributed to a successful year for Hollywood, with ticket sales up 18.5% compared to the previous year. Rentrak forecasts that theatrical summer revenue will soon surpass $4 billion. This figure was last achieved in 2023, propelled by releases like Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Recent attempts at counterprogramming included One Night Only, a romantic comedy which opened with $5.7 million. Despite unfavorable reviews (46% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), the film received a “B+” from audiences. Meanwhile, Super Troopers 3, a comedy by the troupe Broken Lizard, debuted with $4 million.

Two limited releases also attracted attention: A24’s Tony, starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, earned $348,955 with an impressive $58,159 per theater. Mubi’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma averaged $50,300 per location across five screens.
