Norway’s progress in the World Cup hinges heavily on Erling Haaland’s performance. In his tournament debut, Haaland showcased his capability to lead the team, netting two goals in Norway’s 4-1 triumph over Iraq in Group I.

Haaland, representing Manchester City, achieved his 56th and 57th international goals. This marked Norway’s return to the World Cup since reaching the knockout stage in 1998, two years prior to Haaland’s birth.

Haaland expressed his determination to live up to the expectations initiated by his impressive performance. ‘Of course I will try,’ Haaland stated, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on future games while maintaining composure.

Norway’s coach, Stale Solbakken, observed Haaland’s readiness, noting his relaxed demeanor in the team’s final training before the match. Solbakken remarked, ‘You could see that he lived up to the occasion.’

Leo Ostigard added Norway’s third goal in the 76th minute, assisted by Martin Odegaard’s corner kick. The game concluded with an own goal by Iraq’s forward Aymen Hussein.

Hussein had initially equalized for Iraq, scoring nine minutes after Haaland’s opening goal. Haaland then restored Norway’s lead before halftime, exploiting a misjudged back pass to Iraq’s goalkeeper Jalal Hassan.

Iraq’s coach Graham Arnold acknowledged the blunder, stating, ‘It is what is and we have to learn from it.’

Haaland’s first goal came in the 29th minute, assisted by a cross from David Moller Wolfe. His right heel finish thrilled Norway’s supporters, who filled the stands in red and performed synchronized Viking row chants.

Iraq, appearing in their second World Cup since their debut in 1986, was buoyed by a sizable fan base concentrated behind one of the goals. Amir Alammari’s cross in the 38th minute enabled Hussein’s clean header, leveling the score at 1-1.

Hussein, with 34 international goals, found pride in Iraq’s World Cup return after 40 years. Despite the 4-1 defeat, Hussein Ali expressed the significance of Iraq’s achievement in qualifying.
