Former Northern Ireland Political Leader Found Guilty of Child Sex Abuse

1 day ago 0

Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, has been found guilty on 18 counts of child sex abuse, including rape. This verdict was reached after a jury trial at Newry Crown Court, located south of Belfast, and has left a significant impact on the territory.

The 63-year-old Donaldson had been a prominent political figure, particularly supportive of Northern Ireland’s union with the United Kingdom. He gained recognition during the Troubles, a period marked by sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. He was the longest-serving member of Parliament before his resignation in 2024 amid a police investigation.

The charges, filed in March 2024, included allegations of sexual abuse involving two victims between 1985 and 2000. Following the charges, Donaldson stepped down as party leader, and his suspension was announced on the party’s website. The statement regarding his suspension has since been removed.

The court also found that Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor Donaldson, had been involved in aiding her husband’s abuse. Even though she was charged along with him, Eleanor was declared unfit to stand trial earlier this year. Both Donaldsons had pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

According to the BBC, Jeffrey Donaldson remained unemotional as the court announced the verdict. He is now in custody awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled later this year.
