Former Judges Request Reexamination of Trump’s Settlement with IRS

4 weeks ago 0

A group of 35 former federal judges has asked a Miami judge to reopen a case involving President Trump and the IRS. Their motion questions the legitimacy of a settlement that concluded the case last week. The judges suspect the agreement might have been fraudulent and want an official review.

President Trump, along with his sons and the Trump family business, sued the IRS in January. They claimed the IRS owed them at least $10 billion. Last week, the lawsuit concluded with two notable outcomes: a $1.8 billion fund for Trump’s allies and significant tax benefits for Trump’s family and businesses. The quick settlement has drawn scrutiny from the judges.

The action was filed in Federal District Court by Democracy Defenders, a nonprofit, with support from the law firms Susman Godfrey and Platkin L.L.P. The judges urge Judge Kathleen M. Williams to reconsider her decision to close the case without detailed examination of the agreement’s terms.

The motion states, “The purported ‘settlement’ that was publicly disclosed after this court dismissed this matter raises profound questions about the parties’ candor toward the court and manipulation of the judicial system, which threatens to undermine confidence in the administration of justice.”

Natalie Baldassarre, a Justice Department spokeswoman, criticized the motion, calling it frivolous. She asserted that dismissing cases without mentioning settlements is common and there’s nothing unusual about the agreement.
