Some 50,000 residents of Garden Grove, California remain under an evacuation order as emergency response teams address a potentially explosive situation at a nearby aerospace manufacturing plant.
Overnight Developments
During the night, emergency responders noted a possible crack in the chemical tank, which holds around 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate. This chemical, used in resins and plastics, is highly toxic and flammable. Interim county fire chief TJ McGovern reported that firefighters observed the tank to assess the situation, discovering the possible crack. Although concerning, this could prevent an explosion by gradually releasing pressure.
Understanding the Chemical Hazard
The incident originated on Thursday, involving a tank at GKN Aerospace that began overheating. Methyl methacrylate reacts exothermically, creating pressure inside closed containers, potentially causing explosions. Such an event occurred in the UK in 2009, resulting in widespread damage. The California tank showed signs of damage, including bulging, and is being cooled with water. Craig Covey, the incident commander, indicated that a slow leak might be preferable to an explosion.
Environmental and Health Concerns
GKN Aerospace emphasized its efforts to mitigate the risk of leaks. Methyl methacrylate can irritate skin, eyes, and respiratory systems, and cause neurological symptoms. Long-term exposure poses serious health risks. Environmental impacts remain uncertain, but containment barriers have been set up, including sand and other materials, to prevent chemical flow into waterways.
Evacuation Measures
Residents continue to be evacuated to avoid exposure to possible blasts and toxic fumes. No fumes have been detected yet by firefighters or the Environmental Protection Agency, but precautionary evacuations extend over a large area. Fire Chief McGovern expressed cautious optimism that the crack could relieve tank pressure, offering a step toward resolving the crisis.
