In Vilnius, Lithuania, the Corgi Race Vilnius celebrated its fifth annual gathering, highlighting much more than the short-legged speed of these charming dogs. The event attracted 150 corgis from various countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, the United States, and Britain.
The event featured a diverse program with 94 dogs participating in the main race. Corgis competed over a 25-meter distance, with qualifiers, semifinals, and a final determining the fastest. The winner was an American competitor named GG, short for Gustave the Girl Dog. Close behind was Mr. Corgington, while Lithuania’s Moka, a former champion, finished third.
The event expanded beyond speed, offering a costume parade, a “smartest nose” challenge, and a loudest bark contest. Thirty-eight corgis donned various costumes, from dinosaur suits to doggy sports gear. Amigo, in a knight-like outfit, won both jury and public Facebook votes.
In the “smartest nose” challenge, corgis searched for hidden treats. Latvian dogs Tora and Rusty shared top honors. The loudest bark contest saw Mr. Corgington triumph, bolstering his reputation as one of the most traveled competitors.
Many corgis were new participants, but six veterans have attended each year, including Amigo, Foksas, Foksis, Madeira, Bulka, and Dziugas.
