56 minutes ago 0

On Saturday morning, nearly 200 people gathered on Washington Street in downtown Naperville with a clear message: participate in the upcoming midterm election. The rally was organized by Indivisible Naperville, the League of Women Voters of Naperville, and the American Association of University Women Naperville Area. This event was one of many ‘No Kings: Vote Early’ rallies scheduled across the Chicago area and the nation.

Additional events took place locally in areas like Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and Elmhurst. Demonstrators cheered as groups marched to the Naperville Municipal Center to vote. The event took place at the Washington Street Bridge, chosen for its proximity to an early voting location at the Naperville Municipal Center.

Donna Cheesebrough, president of the Naperville League of Women Voters, emphasized the rally’s nonpartisan nature and the importance of making a plan to vote early. Signs at the event carried messages such as ‘Now or Never 2026 Midterm Elections’ and ‘Rise Up! Take Back What’s Ours! Vote!’

Naperville resident Nick Owens expressed his support for the Democratic Party, citing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s treatment of people. Protestors on Washington Street voiced their discontent with the Trump administration, chanting for change.

Canadian participant Therese Bouchard, who lives in Chicago, attended to encourage voting. She stressed the importance of voting and expressed Canada’s support for the American people.

The rally’s atmosphere was described as joyful, with a Dixieland band adding to the lively scene. Dianne McGuire, co-leader of Indivisible Naperville, arranged for the music, inspired by a previous performance.

Simultaneously, DuPage County Republicans staged a counter-protest. Trucks with message boards declared opposition to local political figures, like Gov. JB Pritzker, and promoted Republican voting. Kevin Coyne, DuPage County Republican Chair, explained that the trucks aimed to motivate local Republicans to vote early.

As these trucks passed the Naperville rally, attendees turned their backs and booed. Local resident Don McBride expressed his opposition to the Trump administration and emphasized the importance of voting for future generations.
