President Donald Trump occasionally shares endorsements from high-profile figures. Recently, he shared a debunked endorsement on Truth Social. A post quoted Denzel Washington supporting Trump: “I’ve worked with a lot of people in my life, and I’ve never met anyone braver, smarter, or who cares more about America than Donald Trump. He’s a great friend and an even better president. I’m proud to be a steadfast supporter, and I’ll never apologize for it. God Bless America and our president.” This statement was already proven false.
Fact-Checking the Quote
Trump shared this on Truth Social after Snopes published a fact check. On October 10, Snopes reported finding no credible source for the quote or any praise from Washington towards Trump. Washington’s donation records show past support for Democratic candidates like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
The quote Trump shared has been falsely attributed to others, including Matthew McConaughey and Mick Jagger, without evidence. Newsweek contacted Washington’s publicists at PMK Entertainment and the White House but received no comment.
Repeat False Claims
False claims about Washington’s political stance are not new. In 2016, reports falsely stated he supported Trump and criticized Obama. His publicist, Alan Nierob, called the story “100 percent complete fabrication.” Fact-checkers in 2018 debunked another false claim of Washington calling Obama the “criminal-in-chief.” Other fabrications claim Washington stripped his Democratic Party affiliation in favor of Trump. His publicist denied these as complete fabrications.
Similar Misattributed Endorsements
Trump’s social accounts have also falsely claimed endorsements from others like Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s CEO. After such a post appeared in August 2024, JPMorgan stated that Dimon endorsed no one. Trump responded by saying, “Somebody put it up. I don’t know.” Around this time, false AI-generated images suggested Taylor Swift’s supporters backed Trump. Swift later endorsed Kamala Harris, citing these false images as a reason for her public support.
