Andrew Lewis, age 39, who gained fame for his Super Bowl halftime performance, tragically died in an accident. The incident occurred during a BASE jumping attempt in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Lewis was widely recognized for his adventurous spirit, including his participation in extreme sports and running an adventure sports business.
On Sunday, local authorities received reports of an incident at Mineral Bottom, a secluded desert area within a canyon in Grand County, Utah. According to the sheriff’s office, two people were pronounced dead at the scene: Andrew Lewis, a resident of Moab, Utah, and Danny Joe Kregle, a man in his 50s.
Lewis had built a reputation in the extreme sports world through feats in tightrope walking at high altitudes over oceans, waterfalls, and deserts. He founded BASE Jump Moab, a business that offers excursions in Utah for the high-risk sport known as BASE jumping. This involves parachuting off structures such as buildings, bridges, cliffs, and other surfaces. BASE is an acronym for buildings, antennas, spans, and earth.
Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found Lewis and Kregle connected in what appeared to be a tandem BASE jump, according to Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins. Kregle died on impact, while Lewis lived for approximately three hours as emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures.
The sheriff’s office is currently investigating the cause of death for both victims. It has yet to determine the nature of the relationship between Lewis and Kregle. Sheriff Wiggins noted that deputies have responded to other BASE jumping accidents in the Mineral Bottom area previously. Although popular for the sport, the location lacks cellular reception and can take up to an hour to reach from Moab, Utah.
