Considered the best team in baseball this summer, fans expected a potential setback on Friday. Starting pitcher Payton Tolle, who had already exceeded his season high for innings pitched, was set to take the mound. Only Raymond Burgos, recently called up, was available in the bullpen after the rest were used in a lengthy 12-11 win over the Chicago White Sox the night before. The Red Sox aimed to manage through the game strategically.
However, Tolle and Burgos surpassed expectations. Tolle delivered the standout performance of his career, striking out 14 batters and allowing only two hits in six innings against the Athletics. Burgos, relatively unknown to fans before that day, achieved a three-inning save, crucially conserving the bullpen.
