Steve Smith’s Take on Brandon Aiyuk’s Situation

Carolina Panthers legend Steve Smith shares the puzzlement of many NFL fans over the situation involving San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Smith has expressed his confusion, stating he has “no damn idea” what’s happening.

Aiyuk’s issues with the 49ers trace back to 2024 when the team voided his 2026 guaranteed salary. This followed his failure to meet obligations related to his ACL injury rehab from October 2024. Over the past year, Aiyuk has further distanced himself with odd social media posts.

It’s a lot of things, but man, I have no damn idea what’s going on in that young man’s head, Smith said during his appearance on OutKick’s Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich.

Smith emphasized that something is definitely off with Aiyuk. He urged for someone to assist the 28-year-old, saying such a conversation could realign his career goals. Smith noted Aiyuk’s apparent self-sabotage despite his impressive skills on the field.

There’s clearly something going on, and I don’t want to say in his head because that could come off very judgmental, but there’s obviously something going on in his heart that’s not aligning with what his picture is seeing of how his career is starting to go, Smith said.

He needs to have someone in his camp needs to sit him down and ask him what is his real goal and outcome because everything he’s doing right now, he is self-sabotaging himself. Because he’s a hell of a football player.

During his time away from the team, Aiyuk has encountered legal troubles, including a charge for a misdemeanor offense related to a speeding incident. He shared Instagram posts about joining the Washington Commanders and later argued publicly with a former teammate, impacting the chance of such a move.

Aiyuk’s choice of words after head coach Kyle Shanahan’s car accident has also drawn attention. In response to whether Aiyuk will play in the NFL again, Smith expressed uncertainty. He hopes Aiyuk takes steps to preserve his NFL career.

We all have seen players do a lot better, a lot worse things than this, and they’ve still been employed. So, I don’t know what’s going on and I just hope that he can figure it out so he doesn’t find himself in a place that he doesn’t want to be, which is unemployed and looking at his career in the rearview mirror and looking at life without football through the front windshield, Smith said, speaking on behalf of Forzet.

Initially, Aiyuk displayed significant promise, particularly after his 2023 season, when he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. He secured a significant contract extension afterward. However, a serious ACL injury in 2024 cut his season short, leading to a challenging period off the field.
