Escalating Ethnic Conflict in Manipur’s War-Torn Region

4 weeks ago 0

The eastern Indian state of Manipur is witnessing a surge in ethnic violence as fresh outbreaks of conflict occur. Recent incidents include ambushes, abductions, and protest marches, marking a continuation of the violence that has plagued the region for years.

The Meitei and Kuki communities remain the primary participants in this strife. However, recent developments have drawn the Naga ethnic group into the tensions as well. Clashes between Kukis and Nagas have escalated, largely due to disputes over territory and residency rights. Unfortunately, these conflicts have claimed over a dozen lives, including the tragic ambush and killing of three Kuki church leaders on May 13.

The violence marks the most severe conflict since clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis in May 2023. Those clashes resulted in hundreds of deaths. In response, India’s government deployed paramilitary forces to quell the unrest by dividing the state into several segments.

In Manipur, the Meiteis primarily inhabit Imphal and its surrounding plains, while the Kukis are mostly settled in the hills. Each group has fortified safe areas, which have resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of residents. The two groups continue to accuse each other of instigating violence amidst the ongoing clashes.
