Two distinct dinosaur-themed movies made an impression at the North American box office over the weekend. However, neither managed to outshine the continued success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” or the sturdy second-place holder, “The Odyssey.”

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “The End of Oak Street” both debuted in cinemas, aiming for the third spot. According to studio estimates, “The End of Oak Street,” starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, had the edge with a projected $21 million. Meanwhile, the animated “Paw Patrol” movie closely followed with $20.5 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” maintained its top position, earning $70 million over the weekend across U.S. and Canadian theaters. This brings its domestic earnings to an impressive $785.8 million, securing its place as the fourth-biggest domestic release ever. On the global stage, it reached $2 billion, joining the ranks of the only eight films to achieve such a feat. Notably, it became the second-fastest film to do so, after “Avengers: Endgame.”

Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” secured its position with $23.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $504.7 million. Including international box office, it has earned over $1.2 billion, bolstered by $36.6 million from its initial days in China.

“The End of Oak Street” exceeded expectations, generating $21 million from 3,446 locations. Internationally, it brought in an additional $26 million. The movie, directed by David Robert Mitchell, follows a suburban couple in 1982 as their neighborhood is transported back to prehistoric times. While critics rated it well with an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences gave it a CinemaScore of B.

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters, is the third Paw Patrol film since 2021. The PG-rated film received an A CinemaScore from audiences and has grossed a global total of $69 million.

In fifth place, the documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” earned $4 million from only 724 screens. Other new openings included “Six: The Musical Live” at $3 million and “The Brink of War” at $2.7 million. The Tamil-language film “Vishwanath & Sons” secured the tenth spot with $1.6 million.

Several other films were present in the top 10, but others, like the Matthew McConaughey thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King,” debuted outside the top ranks.

As the summer season concluded, the box office accrued over $4.2 billion in ticket sales, exceeding the pre-pandemic figures from 2019. According to Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends, this summer comes close to breaking the record set in 2013. The total for the year stands at just under $6.9 billion.
