The Australian media have identified Brendan Nugent as the suspect arrested in connection with the attack on MP Helen Haines. Nugent’s image has been shown in a police vehicle surrounded by officers. The incident took place when a Toyota Land Cruiser hit Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, northeast Victoria. Although Victoria police have not officially confirmed his name, they mentioned that a 43-year-old man is in custody.

According to reports, Nugent had been a friend of Haines for over 20 years. Haines, serving as an independent MP, remains in critical condition at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. She has lost one leg, and attempts are being made to save the other.

Nugent is scheduled to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court. Newsweek has requested further comment from Victoria Police.

Suspect’s Background

Reports suggest that Nugent was a forestry campaigner in the northeastern part of Victoria, involved with environmental groups. He earned a master’s degree in forest ecosystems science from the University of Melbourne and conducted research on the state’s forestry industry. He was engaged with the anti-logging group Save Our Strathbogie Forest until about six years ago. Bertram Lobert from the group described Nugent as “reasonable and thoughtful,” though he eventually lost contact.

Nugent’s online presence indicated his interest in the environment and politics. His social media interactions with Haines demonstrated acknowledgment, not hostility. He had previously engaged with politicians on environmental issues.

Counterterrorism expert Joshua Roose remarked that Nugent had moved from addressing mainstream environmental concerns to more conspiratorial ideas.

Nugent attended Wangaratta High School, where he played in a state-championship-winning football team in 1998. His father, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, expressed shock, describing the incident as “unfathomable.” They thanked the local community and police for aiding Haines and extended their support to her family.
