Julian Epstein, a seasoned Democratic attorney, has voiced strong opposition to Michigan’s new Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. Epstein, who previously served as chief legal counsel for House Democrats during the Clinton impeachment and later worked for Hillary Clinton’s campaign, expressed support for El-Sayed’s Republican rival, Mike Rogers, in an op-ed for The New York Post.
In a Friday interview with Fox News Digital, Epstein announced his decision to support Rogers, stating that he is “jumping ship” in the contentious Senate race. He characterized the Democratic Party as having lost its way, claiming it no longer accommodates those who want to uphold the Constitution or distance themselves from radical ideologies.
Epstein criticized the party for aligning with views he sees as extreme and detrimental to the free market. He predicts that a substantial number of Democrats will eventually leave the party, citing its shift too far left and loss of moral direction.
Epstein praised Mike Rogers as a practical and moderate candidate, suggesting he would have been compatible with Democrats during Clinton’s presidency. Rogers is actively appealing to Michigan Democrats after El-Sayed’s narrow primary win over the establishment favorite, Rep. Haley Stevens.
Despite El-Sayed’s victory, uncertainty remains about whether Stevens’ supporters will back the party nominee in the forthcoming election.
In his op-ed, Epstein accused El-Sayed of sharing Bernie Sanders’ focus on wealth redistribution rather than generation, and sympathizing with Mideastern groups posing as liberation movements. Epstein alleged that El-Sayed downplays terrorist threats and fails to recognize Israel’s right to exist.
Additionally, Epstein criticized Hasan Piker, El-Sayed’s campaign surrogate, for controversial views, including blaming the US for 9/11 and praising oppressive dictators.
Epstein concluded that Democrats cannot ignore these extremes come November.
